Hi loves!
So it’s a little after my second meal
of the day and I am having some SERIOUS cravings, so I decided to Blog! J One thing I have learned throughout
my journey is that YOU are you’re biggest competition. Especially when it comes
to following a specific DIET, your mind can play some evil tricks on you.
Second meal? Specific diet? Before YOUR mind starts wondering what I am talking
about, I will gladly tell you! I am currently following a Ketogenic Diet which
requires me to have 6 meals a day! Yes, six. My boyfriend is a personal trainer
and nutritionist in addition to his full time job, and has helped me come up
with a diet plan that would meet my long term goals! (diet is by far the most
challenging part for me!)
The word DIET is misused so often, so
let me clear some things up. When you type “define: diet” into Google, two
definitions come up; as a noun, DIET means the kinds of food that a person,
animal, or community habitually eats. As a verb, DIET means to restrict oneself
to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight. In this
Blog, when I say DIET I will be referring to it in its “verb” form BUT any posts
after this, unless specified, DIET will simply mean the food you are eating! I
do NOT do fad diets, or cleanses, or fasting. Ever. I’m not knocking those
methods, I just personally do not believe in short cuts. I am following a Keto
diet to help lose body fat and keep my muscle. When I decided to make a
lifestyle change, I did start eating a lot healthier, but I soon found out that
I am super sensitive to carbs and my metabolism was a little sluggish. So I
need to change up my DIET (how I ate = noun form) and focus on what I was
really trying to accomplish! So far, Keto has vamped up my metabolism and is
really helping me lean out (long term goal)!
What is Keto?
The idea of the Keto diet is to get
your body into a process called Ketosis where you stop burning carbohydrates as fuel
and instead turn to the burning of what are known as ketones. This will occur
when you bring your carbohydrate levels to around 50 grams per day or lower. So
basically it means that the body will start breaking down your own body fat to
fuel the body's normal, everyday functions. WOO HOO buh-bye body fat! It is not
easy nor is it fun. But if it were easy, everyone would be doing. I have goals
to reach, and I will do what I have to in order to reach them! My meals consist
of 4 whole eggs in the morning, 3 chicken meals throughout the day, 2 scoops of
protein post workout, and my last meal of the day is another 4 whole eggs! A
whopping SIX meals per day! Looky there, eating to lose weight, NOT starving
myself to lose weight, WHO KNEW (I’m going to talk about this more in a little
bit)?! Keto isn’t something I will stay on forever, simply because staying on
Keto long term can have some negative side effects. AND once I meet my goal of
leaning out, I plan to maintain my success through a clean and healthy DIET
(noun form); incorporating fruits, carbs, fats, and protein. That way I live
lean all year round without missing out on any of my favorite foods! It takes
about 2 weeks for your body to fully be in Ketosis, so once that happens I get
a cheat meal, or some call it a “carb-up”! And since I am 11 days in, THIS
weekend in Vegas I will be going all out for my cheat meal!
The biggest issue I have with the word
DIET is that some diets out there literally restrict you from eating (not just
from eating your favorite foods, but from eating at all!). People will go days
without a FULL meal, thinking they are “dieting” and losing weight or are only
eating salads and fruit thinking they are being healthy! In my own words, let
me tell you what you are doing when you do not eat: Your body is a lot smarter
than you think. When you don’t eat, or don’t give it the food it needs, it will
go into “starvation mode”. Its way of living has now changed and it needs to do
whatever it has to to stay functioning. So, if you aren’t eating or are only
picking on a few strawberries or munching on some chips or WHATEVER it is,
instead of your body burning that food as energy, its STORING it as energy.
STORED ENERGY = FAT. It now thinks to itself, ‘okay she isn’t going to feed me
again for another 24 hours so in order to stay functioning I need to store
whatever she does give me as energy, a.k.a BODY FAT’. You had a grilled chicken
salad today with low fat dressing and no croutons? And that’s the only meal you
had? Might as well of had the cheeseburger with bacon and extra fries because
your body just stored that entire healthy salad as FAT. Okay, so I sound pretty
harsh right now, but this topic gets to me! If everyone knew how their body
works and how just by making healthier food choices they could drop the weight
they wanted, everyone would be happier and healthier.
So now that you know what won’t work,
let’s talk about what will work: EAT. Eat a lot! Sounds good right?! Before you
dart for the fridge and down that gallon of ice cream, hear me out. When we
feed our body with what it needs, all day every day, our metabolism will love us!
It will speed up and our body will turn to that stubborn fat for energy and
burn it right up! In my own words: our metabolisms are like fires: throw
nothing in it, watch the fire dwindle away. Throw a few twigs in it, watch it
maintain its height. Throw some logs in it, watch the fire blaze to enormous
heights! The more we feed our metabolism the more it will heighten (become
faster), the more it will burn (body fat)! So now your smart little body is
saying, ‘okay, she feeds me every 3 -4 hours, I am getting plenty of food, I
don’t need to store this extra body fat for energy, lets burn it off!! WOO HOO
buh-bye body fat! With all that said, you can’t have a cheeseburger every 3
hours and think you’re gonna lose weight. Our bodies need proteins, fats, carbs;
all in moderation! Consult a nutritionist to see what DIET (noun form) will
work for you! If you’re interested in getting in touch with MY nutritionist,
you can contact him at Christian.Coronato@gmail.com or visit his website at www.ChristianCoronato.com. Just
from looking at my before and after pictures (even before starting my Keto
diet) you can tell he knows his stuff! Of course, I incorporate exercise into
my daily routine, but exercise is just 1-2 hours of my day, what really matters
is how I spend the other 22!
Progress!!
Patience is a virtue with this type of hobby!
I cannot wait to see my progress shots after I
complete my Keto diet!
